Our beliefs have a profound impact on our daily experiences and the trajectory of our entire lives. Our belief system shapes our self-perception and the world around us and is rather complex but fascinating nonetheless. The process of understanding our beliefs is similar to unravelling a complex code to get to the next level, but in the context of our lives, the next level is reaching our full potential.

Matt Aponte, who is a good friend of mine and a self-taught expert on this topic, has a powerful exercise that is designed to make us more aware of and identify any limiting beliefs that may be holding us back. The exercise starts with asking ourselves a specific question related to a limiting belief that we may have and capturing the immediate thoughts that come to mind. You can often discover the specific question to ask, by reflecting on your insecurities and fears. What are you insecure about? What are you fearful of? These are usually rooted in some kind of limiting belief.

The next stage is to enter a relaxed state of mind, which allows for a deeper connection with the subconscious mind. This is crucial because it enables us to receive honest responses from our subconscious mind without the interference of the thinking mind.

Then, pose your question. For example: “What are the thoughts that come to mind about myself when it comes to [insert core pillars of life, fear, or insecurity]?”

If you decide to use the core pillars of life these would be areas such as health, wealth, success, relationships, and so on. By posing this question, you gain insight into your subconscious beliefs and thought patterns related to these crucial areas of life, or fears, or insecurities. Please note, that it’s vitally important to capture the very first thought, vision, feeling, or emotion that arises and record it diligently.

Matt has used this exercise with clients from all over the world and finds that his clients are often blown away by the subconscious beliefs they uncover. Matt explains that our subconscious mind always responds to our questions, much like a computer following a programmed command. However, the challenge lies in acknowledging and accepting the responses without dismissing or downplaying them due to conscious biases, societal conditioning, or fear itself.

The process of reprogramming the subconscious mind is not an overnight process and begins with transforming the identified negative beliefs into positive affirmations through the power of language. When creating affirmations it’s important to use statements that begin with “I am” or “I have,” as these present-tense phrases resonate with the subconscious mind. Some examples could be “I am abundant” or “I have unwavering confidence.”

You may or may not have questions about affirmations and if they actually work. I don’t know about you but when I first tried them I knew that I was bullshitting myself. Matt explains that the way affirmations are phrased plays a crucial role in their ability to work for people and that if you just grab an affirmation off of the internet it’s not going to work for you!

Nearly all affirmations found online are inaccurately worded and lack the proper neuro-linguistic programming structure. Instead, you need to create affirmations that are specifically created for you and your subconscious limiting beliefs. If you’re still having a hard time with affirmations, ask empowering questions instead of making declarative statements. Matt explains that questions have a way of bypassing the analytical thinking mind and reaching the subconscious more effectively.

Questions hold such power in reprogramming the subconscious because of the way our subconscious mind operates beyond the constraints of time and space and is always present in the “now”. By asking questions, you can communicate with your subconscious mind and explore the endless realm of possibilities and potential solutions. This is a process and it takes time for new neural pathways to form and old ones to fade away so be patient, and have fun.

By identifying our limiting beliefs, we can begin to consciously recognise what is holding us back from reaching our potential and living the life we envision, and start to do something about it. Over time we can reprogram our subconscious mind and manifest the life we truly desire.
